CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Department of Health has announced the Blue-Green Algae warning for Lake Ashtabula has been lifted.

The warning was issued in August when a dog was reportedly killed after ingesting some of the toxic water. Monitoring showed high levels of microcystin, a cyanotoxin caused by blue-green algae.

The Health Department says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers noted a significant improvement in water quality at the lake, so the advisory is no longer required.

People are still urged to err on the side of caution and avoid water that looks discolored or has a foul odor.
