City, ND (VCSUvikings.com)- The Valley City State University women’s basketball team made it a clean sweep on the opening weekend, downing Brandon University 88-58 on Saturday in Valley City.

VCSU improves to 2-0 on the season after also defeating Brandon on Friday night.

Four different Vikings scored in double figures and VCSU shot 52 percent from the field in Saturday’s victory.

Georgia Williams made five 3-pointers in the game, part of a 12-for-26 shooting performance by the Vikings from 3-point range. Williams finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with six assists and four steals.

Lexi Lennon dropped 14 points and four assists, and Alli Vandal added 12 points and six rebounds. Kennedy Henningsgard posted 10 points, and Nisja Bass finished with eight points and four assists.

VCSU led 19-10 after the first quarter and 38-21 at halftime. Brandon closed the gap to 61-47 after the third quarter, but VCSU outscored the Bobcats 27-11 in the fourth.

The Vikings made 12 3-pointers in the game, including two by Paige Meyer off the bench. VCSU shot 52 percent overall (32-62), 46 percent on 3’s (12-26) and 69 percent at the line (12-17).

VCSU won the rebound battle, 39-29, and dished out 16 assists. The Vikings came up with 11 steals and forced 28 Brandon turnovers. VCSU turned the ball over 19 times.

Brandon was led by 16 points from Keisha Cox and 10 points from Amy Williams. The Bobcats shot 37 percent overall (20-54), 22 percent on 3’s (5-23) and 77 percent from the line (13-17).

Up next: Valley City State is back in action Friday, Oct. 28. The Vikings host Northwestern College at 5 p.m. It’s part of a women’s and men’s doubleheader as the VCSU men host Silver Lake College at 7 p.m. that night.
