CITY, N.D. – (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City commission unanimously approved of a resignation agreement with Police Chief Fred Thompson today.

Several city officials told Thompson he brought a higher level of professionalism to the department since his tenure began in July of 2012.

Thompson thanked the commission for their support during his four years of service to the city. He told the media he will pursue another opportunity, he didn’t give any details.

City Administrator David Schelkoph said the resignation goes into effect immediately, so as of today, Lt. Phil Hatcher is the Acting Police Chief of Valley City. Schelkoph said the search process for a new chief of police will begin in January of 2017.

Acting police chief Lt. Phil Hatcher said the resignation of Thompson was a surprise to him and the other police officers today.
