(NewsDakota.com) The Ellendale High School girls and boys basketball teams picked up their first Class B District 5 victories of the 2016-17 season after a sweep of Oakes Friday night.
The girls of Ellendale (2-4, 1-0 District 5) defeated Oakes 53-27, thanks to Alyssa Nishek’s 16 points, nine of them coming via the three-pointer. Brooke Boehm and Kennedy Schmike each contributed 10 points a piece.
Oakes (3-3, 0-1) failed to scored more than 10 points in any quarter, and had a team high 11 points from Shelby Roney.
The Ellendale boys won their fifth consecutive Cowbell game against Oakes, winning 66-46. The Cardinals (2-1, 1-1) rushed out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
Lucas Hofer had three three-pointers and lead his team with 18 points. Tyler Voightman had an even 20 points for the Tornadoes (0-2, 0-1) in the loss. Voightman also made three three-pointers in the contest.
The Oakes boys are in Lidgerwood Monday facing Lidgerwood-Wyndmere, while the girls are in Linton against Linton-HMB. Coverage of the boys game can be heard on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com starting at 7:15 p.m.
