WBB: Jimmies 72, VCSU 60

Kyra Dewald (SR/Jamestown, ND) scored 17 points and six Jimmie players added at least six points each as the Jimmie women’s basketball team remained undefeated in North Star Athletic Association conference play with a 72-60 win over the Valley City State (N.D.) Vikings Saturday evening.

Dewald scored 15 of her 17 points in the second and third quarters in helping UJ build a 24-point lead entering the final ten minutes. However, the Vikings (14-5, 5-1 NSAA), behind Lexi Lennon’s 11 points, outscored the Jimmies 26-14 in the fourth quarter to make the game closer.

Jamestown (11-4, 6-0 NSAA) shot 43 percent in the first quarter but made just one three-pointer out of six attempts and just one of four free throws. They were aided largely by VCSU’s 3-for-15 performance from the field. Georgia Williams had all six Viking points on 3-of-8 shots.

The Jimmies were 7-for-7 at the free throw line in the second quarter, helping turn an eight-point first quarter lead into a 14-point halftime advantage. Dewald (7) and Alexis Watts (SR/Miller, SD) (4) combined for 11 of 19 UJ points in the quarter.

After going scorless in the first half, the Vikings’ Lexi Lennon came alive in the third quarter. She scored 11 of VCSU’s 15 points in the period. However, the Jimmies countered with 25 in the third, led by Dewald with eight. Watts, Bryn Woodside (JR/Albert Lea, MN), Allison Jablonsky (FR/Blaine, MN), Paige Emmel (JR/Bismarck, ND), and Jory Mullen (SO/Pierre, SD) all had three points each to support the balanced scoring attack.

VCSU mounted an impressive fourth quarter comeback, shooting 60 percent in the final ten minutes, but the Jimmie lead built over the previous 30 minutes was too much to overcome.

Lennon led all scorers with 22 and was joined in double figures by Williams with 11.

MBB: VCSU 79, Jimmies 71

The Jimmie men’s basketball team hosted Valley City State (N.D.) in a key North Star Athletic Association conference matchup Saturday night, and it was the visiting Vikings who outscored 23-7 over an eight-minute stretch in the first half, helping turn a three-point deficit turn into a 14-point halftime lead in a 79-71 victory.

Jamestown (8-10, 4-2 NSAA) shot 41 percent in the first half, but were under 33 percent from long-range, connecting on four of 13 attempts. The Vikings (12-8, 4-2) shot 56 percent in the opening 20 minutes, including 60 percent (6-of-10) on three point attempts.

Jayden Ferguson scored 18 first-half points and Austin Dunbar added 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists in staking the Vikings to a 47-33 lead at the break.

Riley Henderson (SO/Bismarck, N.D.) (10) and Jacob Havron(SR/Pukalani, Hawaii) (8) did their part to keep the Jimmie in the game, shooting a combined 8-for-14 in the first half.

Sam Johnson (JR/Mora, Minn.) drained a three to pull the Jimmies within one, 23-22, with 11:20 in the half, but Ferguson, Dunbar, and Ellwood Ellenson scored 14 points in between a Henderson two-pointer to take a 13-point edge with 5:01 left.

VCSU opened the second half with 12 of the first 16 points and led by 22 after a Jason Ralph three. Following a timeout, UJ responded with the game’s next eight points and cut the lead to 14.

The Vikings led 66-47 after a Ferguson bucket with 9:05 left, but the Jimmies came storming back, as Jake Hagler (SR/Cando, N.D.) scored seven of Jamestown’s 12 points in a 12-0 run to make it a 66-59 game at the 6:18 mark. But Ralph connected on another long ball on VCSU’s next possession, and the Jimmies got no closer than five the rest of the way.

Ferguson led all scorers with 24 points for VCSU and finished with seven rebounds. Dunbar recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Also in double figures were Rashad Satahoo with 14, Ralph with 12, and Ellenson with 10.

Hagler’s 18 points and six assists paced the Jimmies, who also got 16 points each from Henderson and Havron. Brown also was in double figures with 13. Havron’s eight rebounds were a team-high.

Jamestown hosts Bellevue (Neb.) at 5 p.m. Sunday while VCSU plays at Waldorf on January 13.
