(NewsDakota.com)- With a total of 110 games won this season and five different regions represented, the 2016-17 Class B girls basketball all-state first team selections are proven winners from across the state of North Dakota.

Four of the five first-teamers played at state tournament. Three of them helped their teams reach the semifinals and two first-team picks concluded the season by squaring off for the state championship in Grand Forks on March 4.

Kindred senior Mikayla Reinke walked away with the hardware and headlines the all-state first team, as selected by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.Alongside her are three more seniors in North Star’s Macey Kvilvang, Our Redeemer’s Morgan Olson and Watford City’s Mackenzie Sparby, plus junior Anna Holen from LaMoure-Litchville-Marion.

While Reinke, a 5-foot-9 guard, didn’t average quite as many eye-catching stats with 10.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game when compared to the other four selections, her production is highly visible in Kindred’s undefeated overall record (26-0) this season.

“The stats don’t really justify what she means to us,” Kindred coach Perry Piatz said. “She is our best defender and usually gets the opponent’s best player. She does so much for our team that doesn’t show up on the stat sheets. A true coach on the floor. Her last three years she has started, our record during them three years is 67-5.”

All four of the first-team seniors were regional Senior Athletes of the Year, with national honor going to Kvilvang. The 6-5 center was also named a finalist for the Miss Basketball award and rejoins the all-state first team after making the team last year as a junior.
Kvilvang averaged a double-double for the season with 21.6 points and 11.5 rebounds. In the state championship game against Kindred, Kvilvang scored a match-high 22 points and played every minute of the contest. She finishes her high school career with 1,892 points and 1,256 rebounds.

Before falling in the title match, Kvilvang led North Star over Olson and Our Redeemer’s in the state semifinals. But, Olson certainly still had her memorable moments. The 5-8 guard capped her high school career with a dominant showing at the state tournament by scoring the most points (76) and making a tournament record 16 triples. In the process, Olson crossed over the career 2,500-point plateau at the tournament.

“Surpassed 2,000 career points in the first week of the season,” ORCS coach Scott Peterson said. “As the Knights’ best player, she always draws heavy defensive pressure and has to work very hard to get open. She still put up impressive numbers. Morgan is also an excellent rebounder.”During the 2016-17 season, Olson averaged 19.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists. As a junior, she made the all-state second team.

Similar to how Kvilvang got the best of Olson at the state tournament, Olson did the same to Watford City’s Sparby in the first round.Sparby, a 6-foot center, dominated the glass at state and throughout the season. She grabbed the most rebounds (40) at the season-ending tournament, having topped Kvilvang with 29.
Like Kvilvang, Sparby also averaged a double-double for the season with 18.5 points and 11.8 rebounds. Plus, was an anchor in the middle of the Wolves’ defense with 2.9 blocks and 1.5 steals per contest.

Concluding the first team is the only non-senior, but junior Holen is already a two-time selection after being named a first-pick last year as a sophomore.
The 5-8 guard guided her LaMoure-Litchville-Marion squad in every sense of the word with 17.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.4 blocks.
“Anna led our Loboe team in every statistical category this year,” L-L-M coach Mitch Carlson said. “She played a complete game this year on the offense and defensive end. What does not show up in the statistical line is her leadership and the intangibles she brings to the team. She works hard and inspires younger players to be the best they can be.”
