CITY, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com)- VCSU baseball won four in a row for the first this season after a series sweep of The University of Winnipeg over the weekend. The Vikings move their record to 12-18 overall and 6-2 in The North Star. They hit the road Saturday and Sunday for a conference series against Dickinson State.
Saturday April 1st
VCSU 10, Winnipeg 0
Jacob VanVacter was nearly un-hittable in the opener allowing just three hits in a complete-game shutout. He did not walk a batter and struck out 10 during his eight innings of work. The game ended by run-rule after eight innings.
The Viking offense banged out 11 hits in the game. Leading 3-0 after three innings, the Vikings broke the game wide open with a five-run fourth inning. Brady Anderson went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs for the Viking offense. Nate Bagby added two hits and an RBI, and Jared Meiklejohn had a hit and two RBIs. Nine different Vikings recorded at least one hit.
Brendan Perron took the loss for Winnipeg after working seven innings on the mound. He gave up eight hits and seven earned runs. Perron walked one and struck out five.
VCSU 6, Winnipeg 1
It was more of the same in game two as the Vikings had strong performances in all three fazes of the game. The offense collected 13 hits, the defense did not commit an error, and the pitcher gave up just four hits.
Andrew Frank started on the hill and went five innings, giving up three hits and no runs. He walked two and struck out eight. Steven Velarde and Tyler Olson each pitched an inning in relief.
Tyler Ukestad was perfect at the plate for VCSU, going 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Brady Anderson homered and doubled as he batted 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. Anderson now has 126 career RBIs which is just five shy of tying the VCSU career record of 131 held by Scott Radloff.
Emmanuel Leyva and Anthony Necochea each had two hits for the Vikings as all but one starter had a hit in the game.
Tyler Moskalyk was tagged with the loss for Winnipeg. He went the distance, giving up 13 hits and six run. He did not walk a batter and struck out five.
Sunday April 2nd
VCSU 11, Winnipeg 1 (7 innings)
The Vikings ended the scheduled 9-inning contest early on Sunday, picking up an 11-1 win in seven innings.
The offense tallied 12 hits en route to the 11 runs. Viking pitchers limited Winnipeg to just four hits.
Jordon Roos started on the mound and went six strong innings for VCSU, giving up just six hits and an unearned run. He walked two and struck out seven. Thomas Lindgren pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Joe Demers and Emmanuel Leyva each had big games at the plate, both finishing 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Anthony Necochea added two hits and Ben Bruenjes scored two runs. The Vikings scored in each of the first four innings to build an 11-0 lead after the fourth.
VCSU 15, Winnipeg 8
Seven Viking starters recorded at least two hits in the series finale as VCSU tallied 19 hits and 15 runs.
Winnipeg took a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but VCSU’s offense responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Brady Anderson and Ben Bruenjes each went 4-for-4 at the plate, and Nate Bagby hit a 3-run home run in the second inning to help VCSU to an early 12-5 lead.
Steven Velarde pitched four scoreless innings of relief to pick up the victory for VCSU. The senior right-hander did not allow a hit, walked just one and struck out four.
Anderson’s 4-for-4 game at the plate included two runs and three RBIs. Bruenjes was 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Bagby finished 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs. Jared Meiklejohn had two hits and drove in three, and Joe Demers, Anthony Necoche and Tyler Ukestad all had two hits as well.
