Minn. (UJ) – Nate Sillerud’s two-out single of Eric Evans (JR/Weyburn, SK, Canada) in the bottom of the ninth brought home the winning run as the Jimmie baseball team fell to Concordia-Moorhead 10-9 Monday at Bucky Burgau Field.
Jamestown opened the scoring in the top of the third, getting five runs against Cobber starter Tanner McBain. Kory Wolden (JR/West Fargo, ND), Taichi Sasaki (JR/Sakai, Osaka, Japan), Landon Uetz (SR/West Fargo, ND), and Alex Sablan (SR/Port Orchard, WA) drove in runs to give UJ a 5-0 lead.
Concordia-Moorhead countered with two runs in the bottom half, cutting the Jimmie lead to two. Tyler Ludlow (JR/Port Orchard, WA) made it 6-2 Jimmies in the sixth with a single to score Wolden.
The Cobbers regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with seven runs, all scored with two outs. After allowing a leadoff double, Marshal Burgess (SO/Brandon, MB, Canada) retired the next two hitters, but then gave up a walk and back-to-back singles before being replaced by Beau Rabedeaux (JR/Poulsbo, WA). Rabedeaux gave up a walk, a single, and a double, giving way to Evans. Evans surrendered a two-run single and hit a batter before getting the final out of the inning.
UJ tied the game in their next at-bat, scoring three runs on three hits and a Cobber error. Scooter Turin (JR/Sandy, OR)’s sacrifice bunt was misplayed by the third baseman and allowed Mark Kane (SR/Tinley Park, IL) and Peter Pennylegion (JR/Ferndale, WA) to score. Turin, who ended up at third on the play, crossed the plate on Christian Shouman (SR/Lake Stevens, WA)’s single to left.
UJ had a chance to take a lead in the eighth, getting runners to second and third with two outs, but were unable to drive one in.
Evans (2-1) pitched the final three innings for the Jimmies, giving up one run on six hits, striking out four. Tanner Storm (1-0), the last of eight Cobber pitchers, allowed one hit in his only inning of work to get the win. Nick Torres (JR/Bremerton, WA) got his first start of the year for Jamestown and went 2 2/3 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and three walks. Lance Kotter (SR/Boise, ID) pitched 2 1/3 innings and struck out four while allowing one hit.
Jamestown finished with 15 hits on the day. Uetz was 3-for-4 while Wolden, Sasaki, Ludlow, and Shouman had two hits a piece. Kane was 1-for-2 and walked three times, scoring twice.
The Jimmies (30-15) host Mayville State (N.D.) on Saturday and Sunday at Jack Brown Stadium.
