N.D. (UJ) – Chase Thometz (JR/Sandy, OR) struck out nine hitters in seven innings and Nick Torres (JR/Bremerton, WA) ended a Valley City State rally in the top of the ninth as the Jimmie baseball team won 5-4 in the opening game of Sunday’s doubleheader.
In the second game, Mark Kane (SR/Tinley Park, IL), Landon Uetz (SR/West Fargo, ND), and Peter Pennylegion (JR/Ferndale, WA) all homered and the Jimmies scored in every inning on the way to a 12-2 win to complete the sweep and take three of four from the Vikings on the weekend.
Vince Sablan (SR/Port Orchard, WA) and Taichi Sasaki (JR/Sakai, Osaka, Japan) had two hits in the opener for the Jimmies, who took a 3-0 lead after two innings. Uetz, Sablan, and Kory Wolden (JR/West Fargo, ND) had the RBI hits.
VCSU got two runs back on Grant Wehseler’s home run in the top of the fourth. Jamestown answered with an RBI triple from Quinn Irey (JR/Bismarck, ND) and tacked on another run as Matt Noll (SR/Bremerton, WA) scored on a passed ball.
Brady Anderson homered in the top of the eighth to cut the Jimmie lead to 5-3, and Wehseler singled in a run in the top of the ninth to make it 5-4. With runners on first and second, Torres came into the game and induced a double-play and a groundout to third to end the Viking rally.
Jordon Roos took the loss for VCSU. He gave up five runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. Wehseler and Ben Bruenjes each had two hits.
The Jimmie bats came alive in game two, pounding out 12 hits off of four Viking pitchers in a 12-2 win. Scooter Turin (JR/Sandy, OR) was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Vince Sablan and Quinn Irey also had two hits.
Logan Lund (SR/Tolna, ND) was the winning pitcher for Jamestown, pitching five innings and giving up two runs on four hits, striking out four. Gabriel Kastenmeier (JR/Blaine, MN) and Marshal Burgess (SO/Brandon, MB, Canada) each worked a scoreless inning of relief.
Steven Velarde was the losing pitcher. He went three innings and surrendered six runs (four earned) on six hits. Joe Demers homered and had two hits for the Vikings, who finished with six hits.
Jamestown improves to 36-17 overall and 17-7 in conference play. VCSU ends the regular season at 25-23 and 18-6 in the NSAA.
