(NewsDakota.com)——-The Carrington Cardinal’s won three games on Wednesday and claimed it’s 5th Region 3 baseball title in 6 years defeating Sheyenne-New Rockford (S-NR) 3-0 in the second championship game. The Cardinal’s defeated Midkota-DP-L-GCC 2-1 and S-NR 11-1 earlier in the day and pitched there way into the state tourney with a combined 2 hit shutout from Braxton Hewitt, Kyle Leapaldt, and Garrett Bickett. Hewitt (40 pitches)and Leapaldt (41 pitches) had a total of 81 pitches left in the tournament and the duo combined to pitch 6 1/3 innings shutting down S-NR with just 1 base hit. Leapaldt departed in the sixth inning going 4 1/3 allowing no hits. Bickett entered and was greeted by S-NR’s second hit of the game, a double from Seth Soderholm, and promptly retired the next 5 batters in order including 3 strikeouts and picked up the save.

Leapaldt (1-2), drove in the first run of the game on an RBI double in the first inning scoring Jayden Rosenau (1-3), who singled earlier. Drew Page (1-3) added a 2 run double in the 3rd inning scoring Hewitt (1-3) and Leapaldt for the 3-0 decision.

S-NR’s only scoring threat came in the 3rd inning, after a walk to Riley Longnecker and a base hit for Bo Belquist. Teddy Allmaras layed down a sacrifice bunt that put runners at 2nd and 3rd for the Blacksox with 1 out. Leapaldt entered the game and picked Belquist off 2nd base for the 2nd out and struckout Josh McKnight to end the inning. The Blacksox wrapped up the season at 12-8 overall and Carrington improved to 17-6 overall heading into the state tourney.

RECAP OF FIRST TWO GAMES:

Carrington 2  Midkota/Dakota Prairie 1, elimination game

All the runs scored in the first game of the day, were scored on bases loaded walks.  Carrington scored their runs in the second and third inning, MDP in the sixth inning.  Carrington’s lone hit was off the bat of first basemen Trey Rosenau in the second inning.  MDP had five combined hits, Hunter Gibson, Eric Salveson, Cole Varnson, Jake Avdem and Carter Anderson had one each.  Sophomore Lucas Geiszler was the winning pitcher, working four and a third innings, no runs, five hits, four strikeouts.  Kyle Leapaldt pitched an inning and Braxton Hewitt two innings in relief for the Cardinals.  Freshman Jake Avdem took the loss, also working four and third, one run, one hit, nine walks and no strikeouts.  MDP ended their season at 12-11 overall.

Carrington 11  Sheyenne/New Rockford 1, 6 innings, 10-run rule

In the first championship game on Wednesday afternoon, the Cardinals scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second, one in the fourth and a five-run sixth inning putting the game away.  SNR Blacksox scored their only run of the game in the bottom on the sixth when Senior Seth Soderholm hit an RBI single scoring Riley Longnecker.  Senior Braxton Hewitt was the winning pitcher, working five innings, no runs, four strikeouts, no walks and one hit.  Garrett Bickett worked one inning in relief.  Taking the loss was Riley Longnecker, working five innings, six runs, nine walks and nine hits.  Ty Smith worked in an inning in relief.
