N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Valley City Legion Baseball played in a pair of close games during opening of day of The Class A Southeast Region Tournament in Wahpeton. Post 60 held on to beat Casselton 2-1 in the first game and were edged out by host Wahpeton Post 20 4-3 in the night cap. With their season on the line Valley City plays The West Fargo Aces in a loser’s out game Friday at 4. Pregame starts 10 minutes before first pitch on KOVC and NewsDakota.com.
Game 1: #6 Valley City 2 #3 Casselton 2
Post 60 waited until the postseason to earn their first region victory. All the scoring came in the 5th. In the top of the inning Devin Anderson drew a walk and Dalton Ondracek reached safely on an error, both came home on a double by Nate Rodriguez. Casselton’s lone run came after Garret Prante got walked with the bases loaded.
Ondracek hit a double and single for Post 60 and Anderson was walked 3 times. Casselton had hits from Andrew Volk and Cade Merigan. Rodriguez, who carried a no hitter into the 5th, struck out 8 and gave up 2 hits. Jonah Lietz went 6 innings for Casselton in a losing effort, he walked 5 while punching out 4.
Game 2: #2 Wahpeton 4 #6 Valley City 3
Valley City had the tying and go ahead runs aboard in the top of the 7th when a double play ended their chances for a comeback. Post 60 struggled to hit with runners on stranding 8. Rodriguez drove in Anderson in the 1st inning with a double. Hunter Berg’s sac fly in the 2nd tied the game at 1. Rodriguez collected his 4th RBI on day with a sac fly in the 3rd to put Post 60 back up 2-1.
In the 4th Wahpeton sent 8 batters to the plate and scored 3 times. Nolan Wamre brought home a pair with a base hit. Trailing 4-2 Stephan Brooks reached second base on a error and eventually scored on a ground out by Sam Jenson in the 6th but that’d be it for Post 60’s scoring.
Anderson went 2 for 4 and Justin Manson was walked twice. Rylee Bjork went all 7 for Valley City. He surrendered 5 hits, walked 4 and stuck out 4. Jake Uhlich pitched 2 innings of relief for the win.
