CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – New changes to North Dakota’s child passenger safety law take effect next week on Tuesday, August 1st.

The new law extends the time a child is required to ride in a restraint seat by one year. Children younger than 8 years will be required to ride in a car seat or booster unless they’re four-feet nine-inches or taller.

Valley City Police Sgt. Nick Horner said anyone with questions should call him at the police department at 845-3110. Horner talked about the new law on our Voice of the Valley program with Steve Urness.

Violating drivers could be fined $25 and lose a point on their license. North Dakota Department of Health officials recommend all children younger than 13 years ride in the back seat. Children should ride rear-facing until at least two years of age.
