MAYVILLE, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com) – Four Vikings scored double-digit kills Wednesday night as the Viking volleyball team went on the road and defeated Mayville State University in four sets.

All four sets were decided by the minimum two points as the Vikings picked up a 25-23, 26-24, 23-25, 25-23 victory over the Comets.

Valley City State improves to 9-8 overall this season and 3-3 in the North Star Athletic Association. It’s the first time the Vikings have been over .500 this season and the first time they’ve had a winning record this late in a season since 2009. Since starting the year 0-4, the Vikings have posted a 9-4 record in their last 13 matches. VCSU is now tied with Presentation College for fourth place in the NSAA standings.

Mayville State drops to 5-18 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Megan Johnson, VCSU’s lone senior, led the Viking attack Wednesday at Mayville with 14 kills. Freshman McKinley Putnam had a big match as well with 12 kills and just two errors. Putnam hit for a blistering .526 percentage and her 12 kills were a career high. Freshman Paige Benson and junior Clarissa Olsoneach had 10 kills.

Freshman setter Rowan Garcia came up big as well, posting 32 assists, three aces and eight digs. Junior setter Leah Ruter had a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs. Junior Hailie Wilds led the defense with 21 digs, and junior Polette Medina had 12 digs and four kills.

The Vikings outhit the Comets in the match, .241 to .180. Each team had five service aces and eight team blocks.
