N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—–The opening round of the 2017 Region 3 girls volleyball tournament with no upsets. Lamoure defeated South Border 3-0, Oakes defeated Napoleon-GS 3-1, Medina-Pingree-Buchanon (MPB) downed Edgely-Kulm-Montpeiler (EKM) 3-1, and Carrington knocked off Linton-HMB 3-0.
Lamoure 3 South Border 0
The 2 time defending state champion Lamoure-LM (LLM) Loboes defeated South Border 25-13, 25-16, 25-4 to advance to the semifinals. Anna Holen led LLM with a match high 10 kills and younger sister Ellie Holen added 8 kills to aid the Loboe victory. Jackie Meiklejohn added a match high 5 aces and 19 assists for LLM. South Border finished the season with a 12-24 overall record and LLM improved to 39-1 overall.
Oakes 3 Napoleon-GS 1
Nicole Schmitz had a match high 17 kills for the Oakes Tornadoes and Makayla Wetzel and TJ Roney added 10 kills to lead the 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 26-24) over the NGS Imperials. Marisa Garza added 6 kills and a match high 5 stuff blocks for Oakes. Alexa Young shared a match high 17 kills to pace the Imperials offensive attack. Kaylin Weigel added 11 kills and a match high 3 aces for NGS. NGS had a 24-21 lead in the fourth set and appeared to be sending the match to a fifth set but Oakes held off 3 set points and scored the final 5 points of the 4th set to win 26-24. The Imperials finished the season with a 14-19 overall record. Oakes improved to 25-9 overall and will face LLM in the semifinals on Tuesday night.
MPB 3 EKM 1
Halle Uehran had a match high 26 kills and 3 aces to lead MPB past EKM 3-1 (25-18, 25-9, 15-25, 25-19). Taylor Sabinash added 16 kills and Megan Moser finished with 14 kills and 3 aces for the Thunder. Sabinash also had 3 stuff blocks. Katie Entzi led EKM with 23 kills, Jamey Ellingson added 7 kills, and Maren Berntson had a match high 5 stuff blocks for the Rebels. EKM finished the season with a 20-13 overall record. MPB improved to 34-3 and will play Carrington in the semifinals on Tuesday.
Carrington 3 Linton-HMB 0
Emerson Hoornaert had a match high 13 kills to pace Carrington to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-13) victory over the Lions of Linton-HMB. Kaedyn Mehring added 10 kills, Bella Hone 9 kills, and McKayla McIntosh added 8 kills for the balanced Cardinal scoring. Hone added 3 stuff blocks for the Cardinals. Destiny Wenger led the Lions with 8 kills and JayCee Richter had 26 digs. Linton-HMB finished the season with a 20-17 overall record and Carrington improved to 27-9 overall.
The semifinals will start at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday night and pregame starting at 5:40 on TED FM 98.3 and www.newsdakota.com The Oakes versus LLM match will also be aired on AM 1220 KDDR. Oakes and LLM will play at 6:00 and MPB and Carrington will start around 8:00 P.M.
