VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – ON THE MOVE celebrates 20 years in Valley City.
Young People’s Health Heart spokeswoman Andrea Winter said ON THE MOVE is a physical activity program for all ages and is designed to help Barnes County residents set a physical activity goal and meet it. ON THE MOVE starts January 1 and runs until March 15. The program offers tips, support and incentives.
Join ON THE MOVE…either FREE (where you set your own personal activity goal and exercise on your own) or join for a minimal fee and attend all of the exercise classes and receive free incentives.
“Our nation spends about 4 trillion dollars on healthcare with approximately 75% of it going towards chronic disease such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and cancer,” says Sharon Buhr, MPH, LRD and ON THE MOVE Chair. “Exercise can reduce your risk of developing these diseases and save healthcare dollars.”
“Exercise promotes health. One of the remedies for illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease is exercise. If we would walk a little more and ride less, we can feel better and spend less on our health care.” states Dave Carlsrud, Mayor of Valley City, “One of my physical education teachers told us …never ride when you can walk and never walk when you can run!”
Interested in classes, new fitness opportunities and incentive gifts? Then pay only $15 for a single membership or $45 for a family membership. Paid members will receive the incentive gifts and have unlimited access to all the Try-It sessions and classes. The majority of the classes and Try-It sessions will be offered at the Gaukler Family Wellness Center. Try out the Wellness Center while you try out a new class.
The local fitness businesses are partnering with ON THE MOVE to let people who join try out their exercise facilities. Gaukler Family Wellness Center will be giving out a free one day pass to all paid ON THE MOVE members so they can try out any of the equipment, classes and swimming pool.
B-Fit 24/7 is offering free admittance Jan. 2- Mar. 2 for paid ON THE MOVE members during manager hours which are Monday and Wednesday from 4:00-6:00 pm and Tuesday and Friday from 7:00-8:00 am.
In addition there will also be many of the favorite classes offered like Walk Away the Pounds and Hand Weight Routine held at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, which will run Monday through Thursday at 11:30 am starting January and running through March 1.
One of the ON THE MOVE partners, NDSU Extension, will also offer a variety of educational classes. Sue Milender Toppen will present classes on fats and oils, the importance of sleep, managing stress and nourishing the digestive system.
Other great opportunities are the “Weigh 2 Change – Diabetes Prevention Program”. This program will start January 9 and will be led by trained lifestyle coaches. It is FREE for paid ON THE MOVE members.
Another class called “Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP)” is a new class that will be offered for people with type 2 diabetes. This program will also start on January 9. It is FREE for any community members. Pre-registration is required for both of the classes by calling 845-8518.
“Everyone is welcome to join ON THE MOVE! You can become a free ON THE MOVE member by simply writing down your physical activity goal, sharing it with us and joining the community spirit!” states Andrea Winter, LRD at City County Health District, “We will send you information to help you stay motivated.”
