N.D. (NewsDakota.com)——McKenzie Johnson (junior) scored a game high 19 points including 5 three pointers and 5 steals to help the Carrington girls basketball defeat the Oakes Tornadoes 78-40. Haley Hewitt (senior) added 15 points, 3 steals, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds. Emerson Hoornaert (senior)added 14 points and 4 assists and younger sister Addison (sophomore) added 10 points, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Bella Hone added 7 points and a game high 9 rebounds and Jill Endres added a game high 7 blocked shots to aid the Cardinal victory. The Cards scored 25 first quarter points and led 40-25 at halftime. A 22-6 third quarter blew the game wide open as Carrington took a 62-31 lead into the final quarter.
Oakes sophomore Nicole Schmitz had 17 points and 7 boards and Sadie Hanson added 13 points and 6 rebounds to pace the Tornadoes offensively. Turnovers were costly as the Tornadoes gave the ball away 21 times, Carrington finished with 10 turnovers. The Tornadoes dropped to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in District 5 play and the sixth rated Cardinals improved to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in District 5 play. Next action for Oakes will be at Lamoure on the 25th and Carrington will host LaMoure next Tuesday in a game that could determine the number 1 seed in the upcoming District 5 tourney.
