MADDOCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The opening day of the 2018 District Seven Girls Basketball Tourney kicked off on Friday with three games at Maddock High School. The Hornets of Harvey/Wells County are the defending champs and won convincingly in their first game. Here are the results:
No. 5 New Rockford/Sheyenne 40 No. 4 Lakota 39
The first game of the tourney saw a minor upset, as the Rockets hang on to beat the Raiders by one point by a final bucket in the fourth quarter. With time winding down, the Rockets would work the ball around the perimeter and finally get the ball to freshman Dani Bjerke who would hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left in the game to give the Rockets a one point advantage. The Raiders would get the ball back but the Rockets would steal the in-bounce pass and hold the ball around the half line for the victory. Sophomore Hannah Haley led all scorers with 21 points including two 3-pointers. Senior Breanne Schmidt had 20 points to lead Lakota. The Raiders had 29 turnovers, the Rockets had 12. NRS improves to 8-12 overall, Lakota drops to 7-13.
No. 2 Harvey/Wells County 57 No. 7 Dakota Prairie 19
HWC jumped out to a 16-2 lead at the end of first quarter and never looked back as they move into the second semifinal on Saturday. Junior Jaye Fike led all scorers with 21 points, including two 3-pointers. Sophomore Carly Lippert led the way for the Knights with five points. HWC improves to 11-9 overall, DP drops to 4-16 overall.
No. 3 Benson County 46 vs. No. 6 Warwick 32
BC improves to 10-10 overall, Warwick falls to 3-16 overall.

4pm – Dakota Prairie vs. Warwick (elimination game)
530pm – No. 1 Four Winds/Minnewaukan vs. No. 5 New Rockford/Sheyenne (semifinal)
7pm – Harvey/Wells County vs. Benson County (semifinal)
