DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- In an EDC doubleheader Friday in Devils Lake the Valley City girls’ could find a way passed The Firebirds’ defense in a 67-30 loss while the had strong second half to win 69-64 ending a long winless drought.

The Hi-Liners girls drop to 5-11 in regional play and the boys move to 2-15. Both teams play Thursday against Fargo North. The girls are on the road and the boys at home.

 

GBB: Devils Lake 67 vs. Valley City 30

The Firebirds used 20 first half turnovers to build a 40-14 halftime lead and never trailed tagging on 27 more points in the second half to take the season series from The Hi-Liners.

Courtney Lloyd scored 10 to lead Valley City. Taryn Dieterle had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Lindsey Noeske pulled down 9 rebounds with 4 points.

Mattea Vetsch from Devils Lake poured in 14 points. Jess Mertens scored 12 and Abby Heilman and Abby Johnson both had 10.

 

BBB: Valley City 69 vs. Devils Lake 64

Since beating The Firebirds 68-59 at home on December 29th at home The Hi-Liners dropped their next 8 games before snapping that streak Friday night again beating Devils Lake.

Valley City took an early before play was halted for over 10 minutes for officials to clean the courts after The Hi-Liner’s Reese Huschka suffered a bloody nose setting a screen. Devils Lake went a 12-2 run after that and took the lead into the half 35-29.

The Hi-Liners wouldn’t go back on top until Avery Bennefeld would fouled with 7:41 left in the game and made both foul shots to put Valley City on top 53-52. The Firebirds kept on The Hi-Liner’s heels but behind Matthew Lyter’s 19 second half points and the teams free throw shooting, 17 for 22, they were able to hang on for the win.

Lyter ended the game with 27 points to lead all scorers. Bennefeld poured in 20 with Riley Miller added 10. Devils Lake was led by Jagger Miller with 15 points.
