JAMESTOWN (NewsDakota.com) The Oakes, Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier, and Carrington High girls basketball teams were all victorious on the first day of the Class B District 5 Tournament on Friday, and are one step closer to advancing to the Region III tournament.
Oakes 42 Ellendale 34
In the first of the three games, Oakes had a 13-0 lead after the first quarter, and had a lead as large as 20 before Ellendale surged in the second half; pulling to within four with a minute and a half to go in the game. Free throws down the stretch allowed the Tornados to hold onto the victory.
Sadie Hansen had a game high 19 points to propel Oakes to the semifinals. Kennedy Schmike lead the Cardinals with seven points.
Edgeley-Kulm-Monpelier 66 Midkota 22
The fourth best team in the state was up 20-6 after the first eight minutes and never looked back.
Katie Entzi was just short of a double-double with 25 points and nine rebounds; eclipsing the 1,500 point mark for her career.
The Mustangs had 24 turnovers, with Joslyn Hoyt putting in eight points.
Carrington 70 Barnes County North 40
The seventh best team in the state was up by seven after the first quarter, but outscored the Bison 24-7 to end the half and pull away for good.
Carrington was lead in scoring by Jill Endres, who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. BCN, who had 27 turnovers in the loss, had a team high 15 points from Tabitha Muncy.
Day number two commences at 4:30 Saturday with Midkota and Barnes County North meeting in a loser-out contest. At 6, Oakes meets #3 LaMoure-Litchville/Marion, the District 5 regular season champs who had Friday off as the number one seed in the tournament. The 7:30 game features EKM and Carrington.
