FARGO, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- The Oakes High baseball team ended the first week of the 2018 regular season with a 4-1 record in Class B Region I play after winning a pair of games Saturday at the Tharaldson complex in Fargo.

Game One: Oakes 11 Northern Cass 4

Oakes scored the first 10 runs of the game, before the Jaguars scored four in the bottom of the fifth to avoid a run-rule outcome. The Jags would not be able to score again on Mike McKenna, who finished with 11 strikeouts and allowing just two hits outside of the fifth inning.

Trey Juran had quite a game at the plate; three for three, with two singles, a double, and three runs batted in. Nathan Fritel took the loss for Northern Cass, going three innings while striking out two.

Game Two: Oakes 4 Fargo Oak Grove 3

The second game of the doubleheader was nothing like the contest between the Tornadoes and Grovers just a couple of days prior, when Oakes put up 19 runs.

After a 1-1 first inning, the Grovers had their lead off men reach in both the third and fifth innings via walks and later scored. Oakes was able to tie the game in the sixth, and scored the winning run with one out in the seventh; thanks to a double by McKenna that drove in Izaaiah Hoelscher.

Tyler Voightman earned the win for Oakes striking out 11. Dylan Sunderland came up short on the hill for Oak Grove, throwing all seven innings, while punching out five.

The Tornadoes are off until Thursday, May 3 when they head to Casselton to meet the Central Cass Squirrels. Coverage on The Tornado KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com starts at 3:50 p.m., with first pitch at 4 p.m.
