MOORHEAD, Minn. – VCSU freshman Kyle Odegard took first place in men’s javelin and the Valley City State University track and field teams placed fifth overall during the Ron Masanz Classic on Saturday in Moorhead.
Odegard recorded a top toss of 59.47 meters (195-1) to win the men’s javelin, giving him victories in all three meets he has competed at this spring. Odegard ranks 7th in the nation in the NAIA men’s javelin.
Valley City State University athletes racked up 116 points at the Masanz Classic, which combines the team scores of both the men’s and women’s squad. The Vikings took fifth place at the meet, finishing as the top NAIA school.
Viking athletes had 17 Top 5 finishes at the large meet, which featured athletes from 14 different teams. A pair of Viking runners improved on school records they had set earlier this season. Allyssa Weitkum lowered her school-record 800 meter time to 2:20.27, while Kristina Fricke lowered her 3,000 meter steeplechase to 13:05.44.
“This was the last competition for our runners before the conference meet and they put forth some very strong performances,” said VCSU head coach Chris Johnson. “I am excited to see how they fare at Dakota State for the NSAA conference meet in a little over a week and a half. Our field athletes continue to make strides as well and I have a feeling that breakthrough performances await many of them in the near future.”
Up next: Valley City State will bring some athletes to the NDSU Tune-Up meet on Friday, May 4 in Fargo. The majority of VCSU’s athletes will not compete until the NSAA Outdoor Championships on May 10-11 in Madison, S.D.
