OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- After an incredibly close race for mayor in the city of Oakes, the incumbent mayor has been officially re-elected.
Monty Zimmer was declared the winner after a canvassing meeting Monday morning, defeated Nathan O’Brien by just 10 votes. There was one-write in candidate during the June 12 election.
Zimmer, who has been Oakes’ Mayor since 2010, had stated last year that he would not seek another term, but decided earlier this year to run. O’Brien had been a city councilman since 2014.
In addition to the mayor’s race, three city council seats were up for election. Those seats will now be filled by Nick Harris, Art Conklin and Matthew Schaefer, with Schaefer earning the most votes as a write-in candidate.
