BISMARCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Moments of inconsistency factored big into Friday night’s outcome for The Hi-Liners, 2 of their 3 fumbles were turned into scoring drives for Bismarck St.Mary’s as The Saints won 35-8.

Defensively Valley City had chances for big stops that just fell short; on the opening driving they brought St.Mary’s to a 4th and long situation just inside The Hi-Liner 20 and in the 2nd quarter they nearly denied The Saints on a 4th and goal from the 1; both instances ended in touchdowns.

Coach Scott Roerich was happy with some of the improvements he saw after week 1 but says finishing plays needs to be a top priority

Valley City trailed 14-0 after the 1st quarter and 28-0 at the half. Down 35-0 they were finally able to get on the score board. Tate Sufficool threw to Sam Beierle for a 22 yard strike to break the shut out with 3:50 remaining in the game; Sufficool ran in the 2 point conversion.

Sam Payne collected 70 yards on 15 carries as The Hi-Liners lead rusher; he helped sparked an offense that struggled in the 1st quarter but lost the ball twice on fumbles. Coach Roerich see Payne as one of the key offensive contributors this season

Sufficool finished the night 5 for 13 passing with 73 yards. Beierle caught 2 passes for 27 yards; Avery Bennefeld added 22 yards on 2 receptions.

Saints quarterback Drew Dosch completed 6 passes in 10 attempts for 144 yards, he also found the end zone twice. Holten Bradley caught 2 scorings passes of 30 and 32 yards. Joe Heinert scored St.Mary’s first touchdown of the game on a 7 yard run.

Valley City, now 0-2, heads to Grafton next week. St.Mary’s plays at Wahpeton.
