ELLENDALE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- In front of an electric atmosphere, the Oakes Tornadoes and Ellendale Cardinals each took a game from the boys-girls doubleheader on Friday.

Girls: Oakes 46, Ellendale 22

In game one of the doubleheader, the Oakes Tornadoes jumped out to an early 12-1 lead and didn’t look back.

The Tornadoes never trailed in the game and were stingy on defense. In the first three quarters Oakes held Ellendale to just 11 points, and Ellendale didn’t hit multiple field goals in any of the first three quarters either.

Offensively, the Tornadoes were lead by Nicole Schmitz who finished with a whopping 25 points. Schmitz did all her damage from inside the 3-point arc or at the free throw line. As a team, the Tornadoes only hit one three pointer and had only one scorer (N. Schmitz) who finished with double digit points.

Abby Molan lead the way in scoring for Ellendale with 9 points.

Oakes will play Leola/Fredrick this Tuesday and Ellendale will take on Strasburg/Zeeland next.

Boys: Oakes 54, Ellendale 68

The nightcap of the doubleheader went in favor of the Cardinals as the boys dominated the Tornadoes for most of the game. Ellendale got off to a scorching hot start and took a 14-2 lead after one quarter. The lead ballooned to 24-5 in the first half, and the Cardinals lead by 22 (their largest lead) at one point.

Oakes made it interesting in the 4th quarter as they got the deficit down to 10 points but couldn’t get it any closer.

Oakes will take on Leola-Frederick Tuesday night, and Ellendale takes on Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter.
