JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Jon Purintun (SR/Linton, ND) set a new University of Jamestown men’s basketball record for points in a game, scoring 45 to help lead the Jimmies to an 87-73 victory over Valley City State (N.D.) University Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
*VCSU led for most of the opening ten minutes of the game, leading by five points on three different occasions.
*Denzel Kennedy’s basket at the 9:19 mark made it 23-21 in favor of the Vikings. A 7-0 Jimmie run gave the hosts a five-point lead and set the wheels in motion for a shift in momentum.
*A pair of Brady Birch (SO/Melrose, MN) free throws put UJ up 41-30 with 1:56 before halftime, with 11 being Jamestown’s largest lead of the half.
*Purintun followed up a 21-point first half with 24 more in the second. He had 14 of the Jimmies’ first 17 second-half points.
*VCSU staged a 9-0 run to cut Jamestown’s 24-point lead down to 15 at the 8:41 mark, but were unable to get within single digits until 2:20 remained.

FOR UJ
*Purintun broke the previous single-game mark of 41, set by Brent Offerdahl against Minnesota-Crookston in the 1994-95 season. Prior to Saturday, Jake Holen was the only other JImmie besides Offerdahl with a 40-point game. Holen dropped 40 against Minot State on January 18, 2008.
*Kevin Oberweiser (SR/Drummond, MT) was also in double figures with 14 points.
*Terrell Alfred (JR/Orlando, FL) had nine points off the bench, and Brady Birch also came off the bench to add eight points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks.
*UJ won for the fifth time in the last six meetings against VCSU.

FOR VCSU
*Logan Nelson led the Vikings with 20 points and nine rebounds.
*Jake Skelly added 13 points and six rebounds.
*The Vikings made 29 of their 72 field goal attempts (40.3%) and were 7 of 20 from three-point range.
*VCSU outrebounded Jamestown 45-41
