Fargo, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)——The Carrington wrestling team sits in fourth place after the first day of the 2019 State Class B state tournament with 46.5 points. The Cardinals will send 4 wrestlers into the semifinal round on Friday afternoon as well. Carrington qualified 8 wrestlers into the state tourney, all of them seeded in the top eight except for 8th grader Kael Kovar at 120 pounds. The Cards will have Treston Lura (113), Brecken Lura (126), Lucas Geiszler (138), and Tate Hoggarth (152) all advancing to the semifinals. Treston Lura (36-14), seeded fifth, defeated the fourth seed, Gavin Dalley of Hettinger-Scranton 10-8 in overtime in the quarterfinals. Treston trailed 7-4 with less than 45 seconds to go in the third period and scored 2 takedowns, the latter of the 2 wasin the final seconds to force OT. Lura would score a takedown in OT to record the 10-8 victory. Brecken Lura, the fourth seed at 126 defeated Matt Anderson (fifth seed) from Hillsboro-CV with a major decision 12-2. Brecken improved to 38-13 overall and will now face number 1 ranked Kyle Burwick (52-0) in the semifinals. Burwick has committed to the University of Wisconsin next year. Geiszler (45-7), defeated Carlos Martinez of Hettinger-Scranton in his quarterfinal match with a 9-0 major decision. Tate Hoggarth (42-13), the number six seed pinned Harvey-WC freshman Carsen Mertz at 4:34 of the third period. Mertz, unseeded, won an injury default match over number 3 seed Kaleb Beeter of Bishop Ryan in the first round. Mertz was ahead 5-0 when the match was stopped due to the injury.
Carrington had 3 other wrestlers lose in the quarterfinals after picking up wins in the first round. Matthew Duchscherer (106), the number 3 seed won an 8-2 decision over Peyton Tuhy of Hettinger-Scranton but lost to number six seed Trevor Hinkle of Pembina County North 8-6. Beau Retzlaff (182), the number 8 seed lost to top seeded Mark Hastings of Hillsboro-CV by pin at 1:36 of the first period. Retzlaff won his first round match by pin at 3:40 of the second period over Lane Wolf of South Border. Colton Buskness (195), 37-13, won his first round match by pin at 4:51 of the third period over Keaton Smith of New Salem-Almont. Buskness would lose a hard fought 4-3 decision to Ellendale-Edgely-Kulm Ethan Ellingson. Kovar (120),lost his first round match by pin to Hettinger-Scranton’s number 7 seed Conner Andress at 3:43 of the second period.
