JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Fort Seward Wagon Train embarked on its 50th journey Monday in Jamestown.

Dubbed the “Golden Legacy Trail”, participants will experience a weeklong excursion around the region while living the life of the original settlers.

The wagon train encourages participants to dress up and leave the technology behind. Traveling daily over the course of the week, the wagon train is expected to cover a total of between 75 to 85 miles by covered wagon, horse, or walking. The historical ride will also feature history talks over the week.

It’s history brings participants from around the world. The Charles family made their way from Maine for their 7th time on the wagon train.

Elizabeth Charles says during the trip, individuals will get the experience out of it based on how much they put into it.

Cathy Heinrich is the cook for the fourth year now. She says it takes months of preparation.

Heinrich says on the trail, they all have assigned duties and some of them assist over the course of the week with kitchen duties.

Around 152 participants are either riding, walking, or leading the wagon train. The trail spans 85 miles and will head along Highway 281 and includes the Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge.
