DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (Newsdakota.com) – The Valley City Royals continue their strong start with two more wins in a doubleheader sweep of Devils Lake Wednesday night at Devils Lake. The Royals took game one 8-3, and game 2 3-2.

Game 1 – Valley City 8, Devils Lake 3

Avery Bennefeld had a double and a home run and drove in three runs leading the Royals in the opener.

Bennefeld and Grady Karges had back-to-back two run doubles in a five run second inning. Bennefeld then lead off the fifth with his first home run of the season. Mitchel Taylor had two hits and drove in a run.

Easton Hesch pitched four scoreless innings to pickup the win. He allowed three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Game 2 – Valley City 3, Devils Lake 2

Braxton Jorissen, Riley Gerhardt and Corey Nelson combined on a no-hitter and Jorissen drove in two runs in game two.

Jorissen started and pitched the first two innings. He gave up one earned run with a walk and a strike out. Riley Gerhardt, pitching for the first time since his Babe Ruth days, struck out four and walked two in three shutout innings for the win. Nelson allowed an unearned run with four strike outs in the final two innings for the save.

The Royals scored all three runs in the third. Alex Thornton had an rbi single and Jorissen added a two run single for the game winning hit.

The Royals are now 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the East Region. They will travel to Wahpeton on Monday, June 15th for a doubleheader. Game one will be at 4pm and can be heard on AM 1490/96.3 FM KOVC and newsdakota.com
