Violet Irene Quick, 88, Valley City, ND passed away at her home on Monday November 9, 2020, surrounded by her family under the care of CHI Health at Home and Hospice.  Violet passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Her husband Doug cared for her at home until her death.

Violet was born February 14, 1932, to Eugene and Helen (Koch) Weller on a farm near Dazey, ND.  She was the second born of a set of twins born on a blustery Valentine’s Day.  She weighed two pounds and her identical twin sister Viola weighed three pounds.  Their Grandmother Koch, a midwife, nursed the babies with an eye dropper, swaddled them in blankets, and in order to keep them warm, placed them in shoe boxes filled with catalogues on the oven door.

Violet attended grade school in rural Dazey and graduated from Dazey High School in 1950.  She graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1953.  As part of her training she worked at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.  Following graduation, she returned to Chicago until coming home to take care of her mother who was diagnosed with cancer.  After her mother’s death in 1955, she moved to Denver and continued to work as a nurse.  She made lots of life-long friends during her school and nursing days.  In 1956, her high school sweetheart Dougdrove to Denver to bring her home.

On January 6, 1957, she and Doug were united in marriage and began their life farming together near Dazey.  In later years, they also farmed land near Karlstad and Beltrami, Minnesota.  Violet was a very devoted farmer’s wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  Although she gave up her nursing career to become a farmer’s wife, neighbors often called upon her for first aid and emergency care.  Violet was an outstanding cook and loved to entertain family and friends.  In 1999, she and Doug moved to Valley City where they enjoyed their “semi-retirement” years with family and several new-found friends.  They loved to go out dancing and to play cards with their group of friends.  They attended Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City.

A special thank-you to Violet’s caregiver, niece Mary Schneider, who could always get her to respond even when the rest of us couldn’t!  We’re grateful for her wonderful help.

Violet is survived by her husband Doug of 63 years; her daughter, Julie and Butch Sizer, Wimbledon, ND; daughter Beth Berge, Dazey; son Jim Quick, Dazey; grandchildren, Emily and Tim Schmiedeberg and their family Caleb, Cole & Bella, Eric and Alison Sizer and their triplets Camden, Parker & Ava, and Trevor, Josh, and Dylan Quick; in-laws Doris Weller, Arlene Quick, Gary & Wendy Quick, and Alan Quick; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her twin sister Viola Carlson; brother Clarence Weller; her parents; and parents-in-law Melvin & Gladys Quick.
