JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Jamestown Police say a man is facing charges after leading officers on an early morning chase Monday that stemmed from an alleged pickup theft.
The incident began when a pickup truck was reported stolen in northwest Jamestown at approximately 1:44 a.m. Monday. After the pickup was spotted, officers began pursuing the vehicle. The pursuit was shortly called off because the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Another pursuit ensued after the pickup was spotted heading north out of town towards the Jamestown Reservoir. The driver crashed near Pelican Point but continued driving onto the ice-covered reservoir. The vehicle stopped in the middle of the ice. The suspect attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended.
The driver of the pickup, 19-year old Jon Schuldheisz, was arrested. He was transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center for evaluation before being taken into custody. Schuldheisz is being held at the Stutsman County Correctional Center awaiting formal charges.
The pickup remains on the ice until authorities can safely remove it from the reservoir.
The Jamestown Police Department was assisted by the Jamestown Area Ambulance, North Dakota Highway Patrol, and the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office. The Stutsman County Dive Team was standingby as needed.
