Oakes, ND (NewsDakota.com) – One day after losing 110 – 108 in double-overtime at Oak Grove, the Oakes Tornadoes boys’ basketball team rolled over the Richland Colts 89-37 Saturday afternoon.  The Colts led 2-0 and 4-2 within the first minutes, but the Tornadoes quickly took the lead and never looked back, cruising to a 56-23 halftime lead.

Seniors Steele Hansen and Garret Meehl scored 10 and 11 points, respectively, in the first quarter, and both ended the half with 18.  The second half saw more action for younger players and those who do not play as much, as the starters took a permanent seat in the third quarter.  Bryley Haberman, Adler Paeper, and Justin Nelson all scored after entering the game for the first time in the second half.

Hansen finished the game with 27 points, and Meehl ended with 20, one day after reaching 1,000 points in his Oakes Varsity career.  Sophomore Joey Heim, the only Tornadoes’ starter who is not a senior, scored 11 points.  Junior Nicholas Thompson led the Colts in scoring with 15, while sophomore Mason Storbakken chipped in 9, including two three-pointers.

The Tornadoes improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Colts fell to 1-4.  The Tornado boys will next play Tuesday night at home against South Border.  Monday night, the Tornado girls play in Gackle against the Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter Imperials, which can be heard around 7:15 pm on KDDR 1220 am, 95.9 fm, and streaming on newsdakota.com.
