JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – In a tight game throughout, featuring 18 lead changes and six ties, the Cardinals of Carrington knock off sixth rated Linton/Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock Lions in two overtimes, 62-51, in the Class B Region 3 Girls basketball championship game at the Civic Center Thursday night.

RV Carrington improves to 19-5 overall, No. 6 LHMB ends their season at 20-3 overall.

At the end of each quarter, both teams would swap leads. The Lions led after quarter one, 14-13, and heading into halftime, Carrington was in the lead 24-23. The Lions retook the lead 40-39 at the end of three quarters of play, and in the fourth, both teams were locked at 48 to send it into the first overtime. No team scored in the first overtime to send the contest into double OT. The Cardinals came out strong in double OT, going on a 14-0 run to end the game. Three players for the Cardinals had double-doubles. Senior Hannah Hagel helped the second overtime push with four free throws and ended with a game high 28 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Senior Kenzie Edland had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Junior Sydnie Grager added 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Cardinals outrebounded the Lions 48-32 and turned the ball over 24 times, LHMB just 14 times. Leading the way for the Lions was Junior Jaycee Richter 19 points and nine steals, Precious Vetter added 13 points, Erica Umber had nine points and 10 boards.

Next up for Carrington will be the State Class B Girls Basketball Tournament at the Minot State Dome next week Thursday-Saturday, March 4-6, 2021. Tune in to the State Hockey semifinals on Friday morning, Feb. 26th, about 11:30am on WDAY/WDAZ/KBMY/KMCY. The brackets will be announced between the first and second periods of the first semifinal game of the day.

The last time the Cardinals went to the State B Girls tourney was 2016, they finished sixth that year.
