MEDORA, N.D. (NDCHF) – Educational event series debuts with Native American Artist at Center of Western Heritage & Cultures in Medora on October 20th.

The Center of Western Heritage & Cultures, the award-winning museum at the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame, (NDCHF) is launching a series of educational events to increase engagement with the general public.

On October 20th, for its first “Meet the Artist” event, the museum welcomes Native American artist Denise Henry-Semple. Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Semple is an enrolled member of the Santee Sioux Nation of Nebraska, belonging to the eagle clan, and a lineal descendant of the Loyal Mdewakanton of Minnesota. She studied Art and Mass Communications at Morningside College.

Semple’s Native roots and artistic passion have influenced her decision to specialize in portraits and realistic depictions of people of the Great Native American Nations. Her recent work, “Sakagawea”, an acrylic on canvas commissioned by collector and NDCHF Trustee, Dale Myers, will be discussed. Semple’s portraits of chiefs Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, Two Moons, Gall, Joseph, Rain in the Face and Lame White Man will also be on display.

David Borlaug, former President of the National Council of the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial will speak briefly.

Live music will be provided by Allan Demaray, accomplished flute player, singer and storyteller.

The event is free and open to the public. Donations support the educational initiatives of the NDCHF Center of Western Heritage & Cultures in Medora.
