VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – For 119 years the Valley City Barnes County Public Library has been the building on Central Avenue and 4th Street. An example of Neoclassical Architecture, featuring solid oak doors, stalwart columns, picturesque dome, and decorative filigree. It’s been called the public library, the building with the lion statues in front, and the Valley City Carnegie Library. Five generations of kids have come to the library and made it a refuge and reading haven. Adults have climbed the steps, walked through the doors searching for books, information, and technology.

Assistant Director Melissa Lloyd said one thing missing from its long proud history. A Library Logo. On September 8th at the Summer “Vikes” on Central the Library will unveil the long-awaited logo! The library will celebrate with games, prizes, library swag featuring the new logo. Free popcorn and soda for anyone who visits their booth.

She said to get a library logo, the Valley City Barnes County Public Library board partnered with another well-known community entity. VCSU. They contacted Ekow Ephrim and his Art 315: Graphic Design II class. He and his students Macy Schlacht, and Jared Grommesh visited with (Former) Library Director Steve Hammel and Assistant Director Melissa Lloyd, to discuss the logo and the branding of the library. The students then came up with ideas and designs they felt reflected the library’s vision and mission of the library and the importance of the library being more than a warehouse for books. The students then presented these designs to the VCBC Public Library Board. The Library Board sought input from the community regarding the different designs.

Valley City is proud of their library and love the building, but a library is more than a building and the Valley City Barnes County Public Library is no exception. The Library’s Mission and Vision statements reflect this sentiment.
“The Mission of the Valley City Barnes County Public Library; to serve the community by providing access to information, technology, and programming. Our Vision is; to preserve the past, embrace the present, and build the future.”
Libraries transform, educate, and entertain. They open doors to the world of reading, exploration, and technology. The library’s doors are open for everyone.

The Summer Nights on Central Event goes from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m on Thursday, September 8th. So stop by the library booth, visit with staff, the library board, and the logo designer, to discuss and view the logo.
