Coach’s Thoughts:
Sheyenne has knocked off Davies and the defending state champs in Grand Forks Central this season. They are a very good team. We hung with them in almost every match and proved that we are good team as well.
At #1 doubles, we had two points to make it to six games in the second set. At #3 doubles, we were up 5-2 in the first set. Kai was on serve in the second set before getting broken at 5-4. Casey had the first set tied at 5-5 while Trey had the second set tied at 5-5.
Boys tennis has so much parody and today just highlights this with all of our close matches between two teams with opposite EDC records of 0-5 and 5-0.
The lone win on the day was Trey and Miles at #2 doubles. They were serving very well with our net player putting away returns. Our returns were solid cross court which either gave our net player a put-a-way opportunity or forced errors from Sheyenne. They were dominant and they believed in themselves and their partner.
Max and Emmet played a fantastic first 7 games. They played loose, they were attacking, and they played without thinking about the score. They just played.
As a team, we need to bottle that type of play no matter the score, no matter who we are playing, and no matter if it is singles or doubles. We only have a couple weeks before the post season to get that ‘click’ with our team to give us a shot at run at the regional tournament. We can do it!
Next action is Friday at 10:30am at home versus Mandan in a non-conference 3-2 line-up. On Saturday, the whole state converges on the FM metro area for the Sheyenne Invitational Tournament where six singles draws and three doubles draws with 17 entries each play at 9 different court sites.
