Mayville, ND (vcsuvikings.com) – Viking Baseball suffered its first loss of the fall season on Tuesday night, dropping a 7-3 contest at Mayville State University.

VCSU’s Tory Nelson hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Mayville State responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and then added three more in the seventh en route to the 7-3 win.

VCSU finished with three runs on eight hits, while Mayville scored its seven runs on nine hits. The Vikings committed three errors while Mayville did not commit an error.

Nelson was 2-for-3 with a walk and his two-run home run to lead VCSU’s offense. Dustin Mertz and Jaden Babiuk each collected two hits as well.

Adam Thompson started on the mound for VCSU and went four innings. The right-hander gave up just three hits and two runs – only one of which was earned. Riley Resnick pitched two innings of relief, allowing four hits and four earned runs. Mitch Taylor pitched two scoreless innings of relief for VCSU, giving up just two hits.

Up next: Valley City State plays its first home game of the fall season on Wednesday, hosting University of Jamestown for a single game at 5 p.m.
