The Jamestown Blue Jays football team traveled 200 miles west this evening with one goal in mind, going back home with a win over number #5 ranked Dickinson in the NDAPSSA. Both teams entered the contest 4-1, but it would be Dickinson with a win.

Both teams would go 3 and out once, before Cephy Sayler would return an interception back 50 yards for a touchdown to give Jamestown the lead 7-0 with 6:43 left in the first quarter. Dickinson would respond with a 7 play, 70-yard touchdown that ended in a 6-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Stephen Zawodny to tight end Kaeden Krieg with 3:39 left in the 1st quarter. Dickinson would go for 2, with Tristan Stallsworth for Dickinson getting into the endzone. Dickinson would lead 8-7.

Tyson Jorrison for Jamestown would break off for a 65-yard reception from quarterback Ryan Kallenbach on a screen pass just 2 plays into the next drive. It was their first offensive touchdown on the day, and their first “first down” on the day as well. Jamestown would take back the lead 14-8 and that would be the score through the end of the 1st quarter.

Dickinson would respond with a 9 play, 90-yard drive that involved no pass plays, Dickinson would go up 15-14 midway through the 2nd quarter.

The Jamestown Blue Jays would put some trickery into their offense late in the 2nd quarter, with reveres, jet sweeps and a shovel pass forward to Tyson Jorrison would get them down to the 8-yard line. Dickinson would force Jamestown into a 4th and goal from the 8-yard line, forcing Jamestown into a 24-yard field goal that would be made from Sarah Sletto pushing Jamestown ahead 17-15.

Dickinson kneeled it down once after the made field goal, giving Jamestown the halftime lead 17-15.

Both teams would struggle to open the third quarter. The Dickinson Midgets would continue moving the ball on the ground, breaking the 100-yard threshold midway through the 3rd quarter. Dickinson would drive from their own 20-yard line on 14 plays finishing with a touchdown on a 3-yard rush from running back Colin Tschetter with 5:30 to play in the 3rd quarter, taking up 6 and half minutes on the drive. Zawodny would scramble in on the 2pt conversion moving Dickinson out in front 23-17.

Kallenbach on a day where passing wasn’t as easy, connected with receiver Nate Walz for a 34-yard touchdown pass giving Jamestown a lead 24-23 in early part of the 4th quarter. Dickinson would respond on the next drive, with 6:55 left in the game, scoring a touchdown on a 5 play, 80-yard touchdown drive, including a 50-yard reception to Krieg who was able to break loose on a tight end screen. Dickinson would miss the 2pt conversion, taking the lead 29-24.

Jamestown couldn’t respond right away, but they also were able to stop Dickinson on defense fast enough to get the ball back with 3:49 left in the ball game needing a touchdown. The Blue Jays would start at their own 20-yard line. With 1:23 left in the game, Jamestown would get down to Dickinson 28-yard line before Jamestown would burn another timeout. Blue Jay fans would hold their breath as Jorrison would fumble the football inside the 10. Referees signal Dickinson recovered the football, concluding the game 29-24.

Dickinson moves to 5-1 on the season and will take on Turtle Mountain at home after a bye next week.  Jamestown moves to 4-2 on the season, with their only other loss coming back in week 1 to Grand Forks Red River. The Blue Jays will return back home to Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium to take on Valley City, kick off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
