JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com/JCF) – The Jamestown Community Foundation has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Jamestown Rural Fire Department, a critical step towards acquiring a new pumper truck. The funding will assist in retiring the department’s aging vehicle, which has faithfully served since 1987. The new truck, boasting advanced capabilities, will replace its 36-year-old counterpart and is expected to significantly enhance firefighting operations.

The upcoming pumper truck is designed to accommodate six firefighters and carry an impressive 2300 gallons of water. Notably, it is tailored to respond effectively to the needs of larger commercial and industrial facilities within the district. The grant is instrumental in initiating this vital upgrade.

To secure the new pumper truck, the local rural fire department must raise a 20% down payment amounting to $157,300. The remaining funds, acquired through a 0% interest USDA loan, will be repaid over the next decade.

The Jamestown Rural Fire District, covering 22 townships in Stutsman County, is governed by a board consisting of 20 district members representing these townships. Financed through taxes collected via mill levy, the district faces constraints under the ND Century Code on the mills it can receive, necessitating extensive fundraising and grant efforts for major projects.

As a volunteer fire department, the Jamestown Rural Fire District serves a vast area of 828 square miles, supporting a population of around 4,500 residents. Responding to emergencies such as fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous materials incidents, and inspections, the department plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the community.
