VALLEY CITY, ND  (VCSUVikings.com)  Valley City State senior Jasmine Barnes and junior Kendra Odegard have been named the NSAA Women’s Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Barnes earned the honor after breaking a 30-year-old school record in the 5000 meters, while Odegard won the women’s javelin for the second consecutive week and still owns the top throw in the NAIA so far this season.

Odegard won the javelin for the second consecutive week for Valley City State (N.D.), winning the title at the Al Cassell Classic hosted by Jamestown (N.D.).  She threw 42.00 meters (137 feet, 9 inches) to claim the javelin title.  Her mark also hit the NAIA ‘A’ automatic qualifying mark, where she currently leads the NAIA with 45.03 meters (147 feet, 9 inches) set on April 6 at the Dr. Tom Johnson Open.  Odegard added a personal best in the hammer throw (40.90 meters – 134 feet, 2 inches) and top nine finishes in all four throwing events.  She is one of just two athletes who are ranked in the Top 10 in the North Star Athletic Association in all four throwing events.

Barnes broke a 30-year-old school record in the 5000-meter run for Valley City State (N.D.) at the Al Cassell Classic, hosted by Jamestown (N.D.).  She won the event in a school record time of 18 minutes, 41.29 seconds.  Barnes’ time is the second fastest time in the North Star Athletic Association so far this season.
