MAYVILLE (NewsDakota)- The magical 2024-25 Carrington Girls Basketball season isn’t over just yet.
Senior Edyn Hoornaert erupted for a season-high 25 points and a game-ending 8-3 run lifted the Cardinals to their first state tournament since 2021 with a 48-44 win over the Kindred Vikings on Saturday at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in a Class A State Qualifying game.
The first half was highlighted by vicious swings of momentum, as Carrington (18-6) took the early 15-6 lead behind Hoornaert and freshman Maara Kutz, who had six each in the first quarter. But Siera Nipstad scored twelve in the second quarter and the Vikings (19-6) had a 29-26 halftime lead.
But the Cardinals clamped down in the third quarter, as Kindred did not make a field goal in the frame and Carrington led 40-31, but Nipstad and Liza Trenbeath led the Vikings on a 10-0 fourth quarter run to take the lead before the decisive run by Carrington, highlighted by 7/11 at the free throw line.
Prior to Saturday, no Cardinal had reached 20 points in a game this season, and the 15/19 (79%) from the charity stripe was the second best mark of the season (12/12, 100% vs Dickinson Trinity). The loss marked the second straight year the Vikings were eliminated at the state qualifying round.
Carrington earned the #6-seed in the Class A State Tournament at the MSU Dome in Minot and will take on #3-seed Valley City in a quarterfinal on Thursday with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at 2:15 PM. When the two teams met on Friday, February 14th, the Hi-Liners prevailed 54-44
