MINOT (NewsDakota)- They ran the Valpo play to perfection, but as was too often the case on Thursday for the Carrington Cardinals, the shot didn’t go in.
Edyn Hoornaert’s potential game-tying three at the buzzer got the backboard and the Valley City Hi-Liners rallied from a 13-point deficit to defeat the Carrington girls 45-42 in the NDHSAA Class A State Quarterfinal at the Minot State University Dome on Thursday afternoon.
The game could not have started better for Carrington, as they dominated both the scoreboard and the backboards for the first twelve minutes of the game. At the 4:08 mark of the second quarter, the Cardinals led 24-11 and were outrebounding Valley City 30-10.
But the Hi-Liners responded with a 12-0 run to cut the lead to one, and with Carrington starting the second half 2-for-17 from the field, Valley City built a 41-33 lead with 4:59 left. But then it was Carrington’s turn to go on a game-tying 9-1 run, capped by a cold-blooded Marah Johnson three that tied the game at 42. But Madison Anderson scored on the next trip and the Cardinals could not catch the Hi-Liners once more.
Carrington will face Turtle Mountain, who fell to South Prairie-Max 70-45 in their quarterfinal, in a consolation semifinal with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at 12:45 PM.
