Jamestown, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Region 1 Boys Basketball Tournament began on Monday March 10th with the Semifinal round. Winners go on losers go home.

Semifinal 1: D2-1 Medina/Pingree/Buchanan 45-71 D1-2 (10) Hankinson
The Pirates are back to a Regional Championship for the first time since 2007 as they dominate the Thunder to win 71-45. The game started back and forth for the first 4 minutes of gameplay before the Pirates went on a 16-0 run to end the 1st quarter to take a 20-6 lead. They wouldn’t look back for the rest of the game as they’d build the lead up in each quarter with a 33-17 lead at the half, 59-34 lead at the end of the 3rd and the win with a 71-45 score.
The Thunder will have to play in the 3rd place game to keep their season alive while the Pirates will get 2 shots at making it to the State Tournament as they play in the Region Championship.
Semifinal 2: D1-1 (7) Oakes 49-46 D2-2 LaMoure-LM
The Tornadoes survive and advanced to their first Region Championship since 2015 as the beat the Loboes 49-46. The game started strong for Oakes as they’d quickly get to a 18-6 lead after the 1st quarter. That lead would slowly be eaten away as it’d only be 29-20 at the end of the 1st half. In the 3rd Brayan Karlgaard would drag the Loboes to a tie game with 3-three balls to make it 37-37. Oakes would get out to a 10-3 run to start the 4th quarter but the Loboes would not go quietly into the goodnight as they’d battle it back to 47-46 but it’d wouldn’t be enough as Karlgaard would foul out sending Beau Thorpe to the line with under 10 left to make it 49-46 which would be the final.
The Loboes will play in the 3rd place game to keep their season alive while the Tornadoes will get a shot at the Region Championship on Thursday night.
