WAHPETON, N.D. — The Valley City Hi-Liners and Wahpeton Huskies slugged it out for seven innings Tuesday afternoon, with Wahpeton emerging victorious in a 10-8 win at John Randall Field.

Valley City struck early in the top of the first inning when Corbyn Powell stole third base and scored on an errant throw by the catcher. Wahpeton answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half, capitalizing on wild pitches by Hi-Liners starting pitcher James Schwehr to take a 2-1 lead.

The Hi-Liners tied the game briefly before the Huskies broke it open with six two-out runs in the third inning. Wahpeton added two more two-out runs in the fourth, extending its lead to 10-4 heading into the fifth.

Valley City mounted a late comeback, scoring once in the fifth and adding three runs in the sixth, aided by a wild pitch, an error and a walk. Reliever Adam Shanenko held Wahpeton scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the Hi-Liners within striking distance.

The Hi-Liners threatened in the seventh after Andrew Sykora drew a two-out walk to load the bases, putting the go-ahead run at first. But a strikeout ended the rally and sealed the loss for Valley City, dropping its record to 0-2.

The Hi-Liners will look for their first win of the season Thursday at noon against Shanley.
