
VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A presentation about the $46 million dollar school referendum was held Tuesday, April 22nd, if passed, it would allow the school district to build a new 3 through 12 school in Valley City. The new school would be connected to Jefferson elementary school.
The public meeting centered on the pros and cons of building a new facility for $46 million or repairing their existing facilities for $37 million.
Property taxes on a residential home valued at $100,000 would increase yearly by $336.46. Commercial property taxes would increase yearly by $373.84 on property valued at $100,000. Ag land taxes would increase by $3.60 per acre under this referendum.
Valley City homeowner Jennifer Aus said it’s big ask for property owners.
Barry Borg owns Ag land within the school district and he had this response.
Larry Robinson liked the proposal. He believes it’s time for the school district to build a modern cost saving facility for students in this community.
One woman expressed concern that younger students would be in the same facility as older students.
One man said he was on a fixed income and that this is a lot of money for them to add to their tax bill.
Another woman said she too was on a fixed income but believed that it was important to support this referendum to ensure that student would have a modern learning facility at one location.

Officials with ICON Architects and superintendent Josh Johnson gave the presentation and answered questions during the April 22nd meeting in the North Gym of the High School.
The next public meeting will be held May 8th at 6:30pm in the Washington Gymnasium. Additional meetings and Q and A sessions and their respective dates are attached below.
