DICKINSON – After a game with a lot of strangeness for Jamestown Jimmies Baseball, they need now a lot of work ahead possibly to save their season.
Despite hitting five home runs, second seed Jamestown was upset Thursday by seventh seed Mayville State 12-11 in the opening round of the NSAA Baseball Championship at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark.
Mayville State (15-30) took the advantage for good in the game with a four-run sixth inning. Two of the runs were scored on a second error of the game by Jimmies’ right fielder Isaiah Roebuck. He misplayed a Riley Rankin RBI single into a play where three runs scored. Zachary Evanochko followed with a sacrifice fly and the Comets led 8-7.
Jalen Denton extended the MSU lead to 10-7 with a two-run home run in the top of the eighth.
Chase Burke attempted to bring Jamestown (32-17) within a run in the bottom of the eighth, but he was robbed of a potential two-run home run when Mayville State center fielder Carson Lundmark reached over the fence for a remarkable catch.
Cam Goff and Kevin Conway made the Comet lead 12-7 with consecutive run-scoring doubles in the top of the ninth.
Jamestown rallied with four in the last of the ninth. Ryan Muizelaar hit his second home run of the game, followed by another solo homer from Jordan Singleton. Ben Patton blasted a two-run homer to left center, his second of the game, with two out before Landon Runge flew out to end the game.
Mayville State scored first in the top of the fourth. A double by Carson Lundmark was misplayed by Roebuck, scoring Chris Shopbell.
The Jimmies scored four in the bottom half. Muizelaar hit a solo homer, Dallas Cummins scored when MSU starter Garret Lundmark made a wild throw down the right field line, Roebuck lofted a sacrifice fly and Patton hit a solo homer.
Jamestown’s 4-1 lead only lasted until the top of the fifth, when the Comets tied the game. Juan Villareal hit a sacrifice fly, followed by a two-run circuit clout by Shopbell.
UJ responded to take a 7-4 lead with a three-run fifth on a sacrifice fly by Triston Madison and a two-run single by Roebuck.
Garret Lundmark (6-4) pitched eight and a third innings for his second win over Jamestown this season. Jack Wold earned his first save.
Ben Bohlmann (2-3) gave up the final three runs in the go-ahead sixth inning for Mayville State. Jimmies Starter Luke Zimmer allowed five runs and four hits in five innings.
Jamestown now must win Friday to remain in the tournament and potentially to keep the season going. They will meet La Sierra. Coverage will begin Friday at 12:45 PM on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
