FESSENDEN (NewsDakota)- It was perhaps the most unique game the 2025 Cardinal softball team will play all season, with four starters at the Carrington T&F meet, and with changes, opportunity arose for other players to shine.
But it was the Harvey/Wells County Hornets who shined brightest in taking advantage of seven walks to pick up a 12-6 win over Carrington on Saturday in non-region play. Carrington (5-4) scored three runs on three hits in the first inning behind a Maara Kutz double and Brynn Smith single. But the Hornets (9-6) answered with two in each of the first three innings and had a 6-3 lead.
In the fifth, Kaydence VanRay walked with two out and Calleigh Hewitt launched her second career home run to cut the deficit to 6-5. But the Hornets added three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to take command. Kutz walked and scored in the seventh for the final run of the game.
The Cardinals travel to McVille on Monday to face Nelson County/Midkota at 4:00pm. A win would clinch a top-3 position in the Region 2 South Division and would avoid the play-in round of the postseason.
