VALLEY CITY, N.D. — The West Fargo Packers erupted for more than 10 two-out runs on Monday to blow past Valley City 17-4, dropping the Hi-Liners to 0-11 on the season.
Despite the final score, Valley City got off to a strong start. Pitcher Adam Shanenko retired the Packers in order in the top of the first inning, and the Hi-Liners responded with three runs in the bottom half. Corbyn Powell, Jack Samuelson and Parker Roelfsema each drove in a run to give Valley City an early 3-0 lead.
Trouble struck in the top of the second, as West Fargo capitalized on two-out opportunities. A diving catch in center field by Trevor Fetsch put the Hi-Liners one out away from escaping with minimal damage, but the Packers plated four two-out runs to take a 5-3 lead.
The bottom of the Packers’ lineup proved to be the difference. The 7-8-9 hitters combined to drive in eight of West Fargo’s 17 runs, with nine-hole hitter Jacob Scholand leading the way. Scholand finished 3-for-3 with five RBIs and reached base in all four of his plate appearances.
In the sixth inning, West Fargo once again extended the lead with another two-out barrage, scoring six more runs to go up 17-3. Valley City added one run in the bottom of the sixth on Roelfsema’s second hit of the day, but the game ended there via the 10-run rule.
Valley City will look to bounce back Tuesday on the road against Grand Forks Central. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
