CARRINGTON (NewsDakota)- For five innings on Tuesday at Cardinal Softball Diamond, Carrington went toe-to-toe with the class of the region, the Thompson Tommies.
Then the Tommies shook loose.
Thompson scored ten runs in the sixth to break open a close game in a 16-5, six inning win over the Cardinals on Tuesday.
Carrington (6-5, 5-2) had to play catch up as the Tommies (10-3, 5-0) scored a run in the first and two in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead, but the Cardinals answered with two runs in the home half after two were out and the lead was cut to 3-2. In the fifth, Thompson scored three times and again Carrington answered with a pair of runs of their own on a Maara Kutz triple and run scored.
But in the sixth, the Tommies sent fifteen to the plate and scored ten runs on six hits to put the game away. Ella Volk walked and scored for Carrington, but it was not enough to avoid the run-rule.
The Cardinals are the South Division 3-seed and will play at the North Division 2-seed on Saturday, May 17 at a time to be determined. Carrington are next in action at Fargo Midseason Madness on Friday night against Ray with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal & KDAK The Cardinal YouTube Channel beginning at 6:45PM.
