WEST FARGO, N.D. — It was another tough outing for the Valley City Hi-Liners on Monday, as they were swept in a doubleheader by the West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs, falling 13-3 and 11-2 in West Fargo.
Game 1 quickly got away from Valley City. Sheyenne jumped all over starter James Schwehr with a 10-run first inning, as the Mustangs’ first nine batters reached base and came around to score. Freshman Chase Coghlan entered in relief and provided stability, allowing just three runs over the final three innings to help prevent an early mercy-rule ending.
Offensively, Corbyn Powell drove in a pair of runs for the Hi-Liners, and Schwehr added an RBI while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Valley City trimmed the deficit to 11-3 entering the bottom of the fourth, but Sheyenne responded with two more runs before shutting the door in the fifth to secure a 13-3 win.
Game 2 started more competitively, as the Hi-Liners managed to stay within striking distance through the early innings. However, another late surge by the Mustangs put the game out of reach and sealed an 11-2 victory to complete the sweep.
Valley City will be back in action Tuesday for its final home game of the season, hosting the Fargo North Spartans at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 1490 AM/96.3 FM KOVC and streamed online at NewsDakota.com.
