STEELE (NewsDakota)- After a six-run top of the fourth inning, the Carrington Cardinals were down by five.

Not a bad time for the biggest inning of the season, in more ways than one.

The Cardinals sent fourteen batters to the plate and scored ten runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run double by Ethan Roller, who had five RBI in the game, to advance in the Region 3B Tournament opener with a 15-9 win over Kidder County on Wednesday afternoon in Steele.

After falling behind immediately, the Cardinals scored twice in the home first on three consecutive doubles by Max Whitman, Tate Wolsky, and Roller for a 2-1 lead.  In the third, the Wolves scored two and Carrington (5-13) answered again as Jacob Boeshans and Whitman each scored a run for a 4-3 lead.

But in the fourth, Kidder County scored six runs on just three hits and carried a 9-4 lead into the last of the fifth. The Cardinals laced five hits in the frame and the Wolves committed four of their eight errors in the inning as Carrington took the lead for good.

Sophomore Taylen Mehring tossed three shutout innings on four hits to pick up his first career win.  Whitman and Roller had three hits each and Whitman scored four runs while Boeshans scored three times in the game.

With the win, Carrington advances to play LaMoure-LME on Monday with coverage on KDDR The Tornado beginning at 11:45AM.
